What's it all about?
MODULE 1
What is the Science of Reading?
This module provides a comprehensive overview of the historical evolution of reading instruction, from traditional methods to evidence-based practices. Participants will explore the significance of research in shaping teaching methodologies and gain insights into the key approaches in the teaching of reading.
MODULE 2
Components of Reading
In this module, participants delve into the science behind reading models, including Scarborough's Reading Rope, the Active View of Reading, and the Writing Rope. Participants will analyse the components of these models and their implications for effective reading instruction.
MODULE 3
Word Recognition
This module focuses on essential word recognition strategies crucial for reading development. Participants will explore phonemic awareness, phonics instruction, decoding, and sight word recognition.
MODULE 4
Comprehension
In this module, participants will explore language comprehension, in particular: vocabulary development, background knowledge, syntax, and text structures, and how they can improve overall reading comprehension skills.
MODULE 5
Putting the Science of Reading into Practice
The final module focuses on applying evidence-based practices in reading instruction. Participants will learn about assessing and planning for literacy instruction, differentiating instruction based on students' reading profiles. This module allows participants to reflect on their personal teaching practices, and for teaching staff as a whole to evaluate their school plan.
